Baby Blanket

When I was growing up, my bed always had a hand crocheted blanket on it that my Nanna Eileen made and they are still used to this day. I certainly inherited her love of wool crafts and a while back I started making a crochet blanket of my own. When we found out there would be a new little person in the family I thought a traditional crochet blanket would be perfect for a cot or pram. Crochet squares are one of the best ways to start learning to crochet. Once I'd laid out the squares selecting the more ladylike colours, I found this tutorial on how to join them together. There are a number of techniques to do it, but this one continues the pattern of the squares and does so subtly. After a border around the edges of all the joined squares, the baby blanket was complete! 

A week later Penelope arrived, and I gave her the blanket when we went to meet her at 8 days old. Hopefully it'll keep her warm over the cold months, and when she gets older she might want to wrap her dolls up in it to keep them toasty!

Make Stuff

Yesterday I did some printing. I've really enjoyed this semester because, even though we're still looking at buildings, it's less about architecture as such and more about typology. I've made models, created collage, sketched, scribbled. It's all been about research through design, trial and error and experimenting with representation. The printing has got me into a 'making' frame of mind and these crochet pieces have got me wanted to get my hooks and needles out!

Colour Wheel

I've crocheted eight squares out of a possible 225 that I'd like to make a good sized blanket. I'd need to do... it's going to take me longer than planned, but hey I can bust out my hook on the train. The other day I misplaced said hook so proceeded to untangle my wool collection, and here we have the colour coded result!

Laptop Knits

My dear friend Maddy has been keeping a secret from me. She has an Etsy shop selling some wonderful knitted laptop cases. They look so cute and well made. Head over to studiomake for a gander...and a purchase! Which makes me think I should make some use out of my Orla Keily one - it was pricey enough (and is now cheaper)!!

Hook and wool

My Nanna used to knit and crochet alot and over the last few years I have really got into it. Project work is so hectic at the moment - we have out critique on Thursday so every hour of the day is going towards preparing for that - and I just need something to take my mind off of CAD, rendering and housing!

Nanna knitted us bedsocks and crocheted blankets so I thought I'd have a go at an Afghan blanket; once you know how it's pretty easy! I also came across this one by Sandra Juto (via kiddet) and I love the range of colours unified by the off-white.

So I say if you need to take your mind off thing, grab a hook and a ball of wool and get crocheting!

Also I'm going to see John Mayer in concert tomorrow evening (for the third time-big fan me!) and if that doesn't make me smile, nothing will! And thank you to everyone commenting, it makes me glad to know people from all over the globe are having a little gander at my humble blog!

My Basket

I have a beautiful Cath Kidston basket with a sailing boat pattern on which I love and in it I keep all my scarves and bags. You can just see the crocheted scarf which I have finally finished!

Odd one out

Can you guess?
For my birthday I was given a book called 100 flowers to knit and crochet which is full of wonderful ideas. They also have a few fruit and veg so I gave the carrot a go! How cute is it?!Very is the answer!

Be not ashamed!

This weekend, I have discovered, is World Wide Knit in Public Day! Something often kept under covers, people are going to be doing it in public!!

Last summer I started crocheting this shawl from some beautiful hand spun wool bought from Prick Your Finger in East London...


It isn't really much of a shawl still (I've been otherwise occupied with my degree work) but hopefully I'll carry on with it this summer adding a contrasting maroon yarn to make it bigger. Will it be complete by winter?


To get me back into practice I've been crocheting with string - quite organic looking, don't you think!
