Peek at Pinterest: Klimt

Hours could be spend collecting images and scrolling the long lengths of the Pinterest boards. Sometimes I seem, inadvertently, to collect images one after the other from different sources with such similar colourings, or I used it to find precedents for projects at work and at home. So I'm starting a series on this here blog called Peek at Pinterest to look back on the pictures I've collected.

The Sunday before last I went with Ben and Rehan to the National Gallery's Facing the Modern: Portrait of Vienna 1900 exhibition. Ever since I went to Vienna a couple of years back and saw some original works of Klimt I have been a massive fan. My particular favourites are Portrait of Fritza Riedler (above middle) and the Water Serpents I. The aspect of this works I love are the delicate feminine portraits teamed with abstract and geometric backdrops sometimes flecked with gold - such a contrast!

Yellow

My Instagram seems to be inadvertently colour coordinating; February was red, March so far is yellow. This weekend I popped home for Mother's Day but also celebrated Ben and Dave's birthdays. Our parting gift was a party bag, and better than the party bags of our younger days! You guys are too creative! Also I was elated to discover Yorkie have reintroduced their honeycomb variety, a favourite from my school days. I was drawn to it's golden wrapper on Friday evening and without a thought I was at the till making a purchase. It tasted just as good as I remembered!

Neutral Garb

I'm very much enjoying the neutral tones of these outfits here. Recently I did purchase the tan leather Chelsea boots and a navy pea coat, which sets me off nicely, but one can never have too many knits. I'm a magpie for wool - I think it's my obsession!

Where?

I've (almost) finished decorating my room! A few posts back I was explaining my colour choices - I've gone for a pale yellow, well 'Orchid White' - and on Pinterest I've been constantly pinning my interior inspiration. What to put up on the wall above my bed has been the most recent quandary, but I'm pretty stuck on a map. I love maps. My great aunt Joan used to go on a lot of walking holidays so we have inherited her collection of maps. The front covers, let alone the maps themselves, are beautiful. After a good old rummage I have found the one for me. It's has basically fallen apart from much use, but it's of my home county, Surrey, and it will soon have pride of place on my wall.

Chalkboard Jar

We popped into Anthropologie last week to scout out a birthday present. These chalkboard label jars are great, it confirms again how much I love this shop!

My Room

Now that I'm back for the summer, I have started the over due task of redecorating my room (I'm typing from the window sill as there isn't really anywhere to sit in here!) It's been pink with purple/maroon skirting boards for about 15 years, so I feel it needs to grow up a bit. I'm halfway through the task of painting the skirting boards Wimborne White but my dilemma comes with the walls. I'm going for yellow, but what yellow, and how yellow!? The decisions continue but for now I'll continue to be inspired by this image.

Design Love Fest

Ooh! I have just stumbled upon (not via the site!) Design Love Fest, a brilliant craft blog. The photography is fab and this craft project to make a camera strap is something I want to give a go! A very colourful place, I'll definitely be following!

Architectural Graphics

It's late and I should be in bed but my mind is teaming with ideas. Our portfolio deadline is on Friday and I have been wracking my brains to think of the best way to present my work. A3 booklet, half A1 sheets, I just can't decide! Then I came across this graphical image by the architect Kate Macintosh - who was in the film Utopia London which we saw when we first started our studies here in Manchester. I love the almost dirty colour, muted tones and simple fonts. Dan said why not set your portfolio out like an old housing brochure, it is housing I'm doing after all. Here are some great American examples. The mind keep whirring...

The Carnival

Yesterday we joined in the street dancing, music and colour of the Notting Hill carnival. When there were questions of whether it would go ahead, it was great to see people there from all walks of life .

Wear Colour

I don't understand how the weather in July can be so miserable! To counteract it we should all embraces brightness and wear a lot of colour and maybe the sun will follow suit...

Orange House

Style Influence

When I'm having my hair cut I always take a picture of this lady because she's always had such a cute short crop. I love the colours in this image; the clashing patterns of her outfit. I've never seen an image of her on The Sartorialist wearing heels which is another reason as to why for me Eva Fontanelli is a style influence!

Hand Made

I love the bursts of colour in an otherwise simple and natural interior. It's Ashley Helvey's Seattle apartment at Design*Sponge and the furniture is handmade.

Tonight we're having Fisherman's Pie for dinner! And soon I'll be time to make some of this...

Laptop Knits

My dear friend Maddy has been keeping a secret from me. She has an Etsy shop selling some wonderful knitted laptop cases. They look so cute and well made. Head over to studiomake for a gander...and a purchase! Which makes me think I should make some use out of my Orla Keily one - it was pricey enough (and is now cheaper)!!

Food Facts

I don't often post up my work (although that was the original idea behind the blog!) but I have been working on my portfolio for university applications for the past few months. I've been thinking of ways in which to improve it, having learnt a lot at work.

Also I have become more and more interested in graphical presentation. I read my cousin's copy of Information is Beautiful and it gave me some further ideas of how to present information. Below is an improved version of a visualisation I originally did with pen and watercolour. Having populated the drawing a bit more, I drew it with ink on trace, scanned it in and converted the lines. To further improve, I'll get me a graphics tablet so it's easier to colour in!

Harry Potter

These Harry Potter covers are fantastic - they have a old Penguin quality about them. The designs are by Logan Walters. I'm afraid I do judge books by their covers!
