Twelve Things: August's Chocolate

Where have the past two months gone? No blog through the whole of September! It isn't as though I haven't been up to anything, in fact it's very much the opposite, so there is alot to catch up on.

Last night was the final of the Great British Bake Off, and I think this series I have been more inspired than any other. In the first few weeks of the programme I decided to give the challenge of the episode a go myself, so I tried to make a swiss roll (disaster) and florentines (far more successful). The latter involved the technique of tempering chocolate which was completely new to me, so I got onto YouTube and found a video which didn't involve a cooking thermometer. It's all quite scientific but the lady explains the science of the chocolate crystals - yup, I had no idea either! The long and short of it is you melt the chocolate and then lower the temperature back down so that the gloopy goodness will harden nice and shiny almost immediately after it has been spread, piped or shaped. I used the tempered chocolate to coat the backs of the delicious florentines, and I poured the left overs into muffin moulds to create chocolate cups to eat ice cream out of. For Dan's birthday cake I spread the tempered chocolate onto a baking sheet and cut out triangles to make bunting, alongside another new chocolate creation, chocolate ganache. For that, here is a great recipe.

All in all it's been a pretty chocolatey time but I feel I have added a new skill to my repertoire - the whole point of a challenge a month I suppose!

Yellow

My Instagram seems to be inadvertently colour coordinating; February was red, March so far is yellow. This weekend I popped home for Mother's Day but also celebrated Ben and Dave's birthdays. Our parting gift was a party bag, and better than the party bags of our younger days! You guys are too creative! Also I was elated to discover Yorkie have reintroduced their honeycomb variety, a favourite from my school days. I was drawn to it's golden wrapper on Friday evening and without a thought I was at the till making a purchase. It tasted just as good as I remembered!

Cake Tower

During a quiet and relaxing weekend, I often get the urge to bake something. Today I felt like a bit of experimentation, so I made up this recipe for chocolate nutty cupcakes. They're very basically:
4oz sugar creamed into 4 oz marg, pop in two eggs (from the chicks) and then mix in 4oz self raising flour. For the flavour stir in 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, 2 tblsp of shredded coconut and a small handful of chopped mixed nuts (I used almonds, pine nuts and hazelnuts). Spoon into cake cases and pop in the oven for 15-20mins. Easy!
The pictures are taken with the cake stand which Steph and Lou gave me for my birthday!

Chocolate Boys

The Mast Brothers have fantastic beards. I don't think you'd ever find a Brit with such well developed facial hair! Anyhow, their chocolate looks so delicious, ever more so by the handcrafted designs of the packaging. They want to keep the creation of the brand within their local community. Have a look at the video here! I've found a place that sells it in London - visiting!

Great Pickings

Yesterday my friend Steph and I went fruit picking at Garson's Farm. We got so excited when we found a hearty bunch of strawbs, so good to see a wide range of sizes and shapes - proves how selective the supermarkets are. There were lots of little kids picking with their parents and grandparents, learning where produce actually comes from.

We picked raspberries and gooseberries too, so currently I'm thinking up a recipe or two to make some cakes with what I got. Tomorrow it's my 21st birthday so I'm preparing for my birthday barbeque at the weekend!

This summer I'm trying to complete this. It's 10 nice things to do this summer, and I've done two so far (my friend Ben and I have turned it into a bit of a competition!)

Easter Weekend

Back in Canterbury after a fleeting trip home. We had relaxing evening at Jess' eating melted Camembert and other treats, a trip up to London (bought a cute vintage skirt) and had the most amazing roast dinner cooked by my aunt! Now I can eat chocolate again I have nibbling away at it a tad too much!

Almost Easter

Just a little snap of a piece of lace I picked up on our day trip to Calais in January. I'm illustrating one of the essays I have for next week, takes just as long as writing it! I'm going home for 5 days over Easter to see family and friends - I can't wait! Food, cinema, shopping trip in London, CHOCOLATE! But for now, it's back to making my essay look pretty...

Yum Yum

When the going gets tough, the tough eat chocolate... and with AutoCAD taking me to my wits' end, I could really do with some of the sweet stuff! Not long now - less than two weeks 'til Easter.
I came across this blog, 101 cookbooks, which has this delicious looking Chocolate Puddle Cookies recipe which I will be trying as soon as I can eat chocolate again. The author also has some ideas for quinoa, which I bought a pack of but didn't really know what to do with, so will have a go at those too. Her photography is fantastic too!

Graze Box

Most of my posts recently have been about food and I reckon it's down to the fact I have given up chocolate again for Lent. It seems to be a yearly thing, just me testing my willpower.
Today my friend Craig showed us this graze box that he had delivered straight to his door. It comes in a lovely brown cardboard box and you can have fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts and other nibbly bits in it and can snack at something healthy all day long!

Chocolate Crispiness

I have been making again: dark chocolate crispie cakes with a caramel glazing! The caramel topping was an after thought as I went a bit happy with the Rice Krispies and then the there wasn't enough chocolate to stick em all together!

In other news, I am now on Flickr!
